Honduras faces great challenges related to systemic corruption, political interference in the justice system, and human rights violations in a context of fragile democratic institutions. President Xiomara Castro took office in January 2022 promising to fight corruption and defend human rights after years of rampant abuses, but her administration has been slow to deliver. Impunity for human rights abuses remains the norm. The country’s murder rate remains among the highest in the world. Women, human rights defenders, Indigenous, Afro-Honduran, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals are among those most vulnerable to violence.
